This blog is dedicated to collecting and preserving
traditional recipes and techniques. The name
was inspired by a conversation I once had with a local baker here in Cologne. He told me that his grandmother (Oma in
German) had given him the recipe for my favorite cake. My grandmother was a great cook and to this day
I can recall the smell of the sugar cookies and Hermits she kept in her
pantry.
If you have a story about a recipe that you
learned from your Oma or Opa, please feel free to share it.
I hope to collect these stories and recipes
for a film or series on traditional recipes handed down from generation to
generation. When so much of the material
we are exposed to on TV and the Web is about the latest and greatest techniques
and ingredients, it is worthwhile to remember the cooking that speaks of home
and family. Many of the world’s great
chefs, when asked about their favorite meals, remember those shared around the
table with their parents and grandparents.
More to follow.
